WHY THIS MATTERS

Start With Your Goals. The Funding Follows.

We start with where you're trying to go, then map the financing path to it.

  1. Goal & Strategy Assessment

We start with what you're trying to achieve, then map it against the categories of funding available.

  2. Program Identification

We identify programs you may be eligible for, and clarify what ion8 can advise on versus execute.

  3. Application Support

We help prepare documentation and positioning within each program's specific rules and timelines.

  4. Technology Implementation

Where program rules allow, we carry the digital transformation work through to execution.

Why Businesses Miss Out on Grant Funding

Without a unified capitalization plan, most organizations fall into the same four traps.

  1. Barrier: Awareness

Government does a poor job of broadcasting available programs, many long-established businesses have never accessed SR&ED, IRAP, or any grant.

  2. Barrier: Execution

Businesses that do find a grant often miss the window or submit a weak application, get rejected, and give up on grant-seeking entirely.

  3. Assumed ineligibility

Most think grants are for startups, not established operators.

  4. Application complexity

Requirements shift from program to program, each with its own documentation demands.

POSITIONING

Capitalization strategy is one part of a full-cycle engagement

ion8 is a full-cycle business management consultancy, covering brand, marketing, systems deployment, and capitalization strategy. Capitalization strategy is one discipline within that practice, not a standalone grant-matching service.

  1. Identify & Strategize

We help you identify and strategize which capitalization options fit your goals, grants, government-backed loans, tax planning referrals, and in some cases, institutional debt.

  2. Beyond the Application

We stay engaged through the digital transformation work itself, implementing the technology and systems a funded project supports, either directly or alongside your chosen implementation partner.

  3. Program Compliant

Where program rules require separation between advisory and execution, we tailor how we work with you to fit each program's requirements, keeping your application on solid ground.

THE FULL PICTURE

Grants are one tool. We look at the whole toolkit.

We help you see where each of these fits and where it doesn't, as part of a coherent capitalization strategy.

  1. Tax Strategies

Credits like SR&ED apply broadly to innovating businesses. ion8 maps where they fit and connects you with a specialist tax partner for filing.

  2. Institutional Debt

Lending through Canada's major banks, BDC, or credit unions like Meridian and Desjardins, often bridging grant-funded and self-funded portions.

  3. Accelerators & Incubators

MaRS, Communitech, and DMZ offer non-dilutive support, mentorship, and in some cases funding.

  4. Private Capital

For businesses at the right stage — venture capital, private equity, angel networks, and corporate venture arms.

FAQs

Grant & Capital Strategy

What does ion8 actually do: write grant applications, or something broader?

Grants are part of a broader capitalization strategy. We help organizations map the full range of financing options — grants, loans, tax planning, and in some cases, private capital — and pursue the ones that fit. For programs with specific advisory rules, like Ontario's digital adoption programs, we operate within those rules to protect your eligibility for follow-on funding.

Do you guarantee grant approval?

Approval depends on program rules, funding cycles, and the strength of your specific application, none of which any consultant controls. What we do commit to is building the strongest possible case within each program's rules and telling you plainly when a program is a poor fit.

How much of my project will grants cover?

It varies significantly by program: some offer a partial rebate on eligible costs, others fund up to a 50% cost share, and a smaller number — often training or workforce programs — cover the full eligible amount. We map your specific project against the programs that actually apply before giving you a number, since a blanket percentage would be misleading.

Does ion8 charge a percentage of the grant we receive?

We structure our fees as project-based or advisory engagements, not as a percentage of awarded funds. We keep the incentive aligned with your outcome, not just the grant size.

Can ion8 both apply for our grant and implement the project it funds?

It depends on the program. For most capitalization work, yes — we can both build the funding case and lead implementation. For a smaller set of programs, like Ontario's digital adoption streams, funder rules require separating the party that plans from the party that executes. In those cases, we structure the engagement so you keep both your funding eligibility and a single point of accountability.

We're in manufacturing, construction, mining, or agri-food: do specific programs exist for us?

Yes. Sector-specific streams exist, particularly for critical industries — the Critical Industrial Technologies (CIT) initiative, for example, targets mining, advanced manufacturing, agri-food, and construction employers upskilling their workforce around AI, cybersecurity, and robotics adoption. We map which of these apply to your sector in a strategy session.

What if we're outside Ontario?

ion8 works with businesses across Canada. Federal programs — SR&ED tax credits, NRC IRAP, and export-readiness funding through the Trade Commissioner Service — apply nationwide, and most provinces run their own versions of digital adoption and workforce funding. We map what's available in your province during a strategy session.

Where can I see the full list of programs ion8 tracks?

Reach out for a capitalization strategy discussion and we'll share the relevant programs for your sector, stage, and project type.

What's the difference between DMAP, TDP, and CIT?

DMAP (Digital Modernization and Adoption Plan) funds the planning stage — up to $15,000 with a 50% cost-share to build a digital roadmap with a registered Digital Adoption Consultant. TDP (Technology Demonstration Program) is the follow-on: implementation funding available only after a DMAP is completed. CIT (Critical Industrial Technologies) is a separate stream for mining, advanced manufacturing, agri-food, and construction employers, funding up to $10,000 in workforce upskilling tied to AI, cybersecurity, and robotics adoption.

Can ion8 both write our DMAP and implement the funded project?

We can write your DMAP as a registered Digital Adoption Consultant, but OCI's rules require independence between the planning and execution roles to protect eligibility for follow-on funding like TDP. Once the DMAP is complete, we hand implementation to your chosen vendor or a separate ion8 team.

Is my business eligible for DMAP?

Ontario-based small and mid-sized businesses with 1–499 employees are generally eligible for DMAP and related OCI programs. Exact eligibility depends on sector, revenue, and current program rules, so we confirm this directly with you before you apply.

What if the current intake window is closed?

OCI programs run on cyclical intake windows rather than staying open year-round, and a closed window doesn't mean the program is gone for good — it may reopen in a future cycle. We track intake dates across programs and can tell you when the next window is expected, so your application is ready the moment it opens. Talk to ion8 about your OCI eligibility.
